What Is Biometric Categorisation?

Biometric Categorisation is an AI system that assigns people to categories on the basis of their biometric data — for example inferring characteristics or group membership from a face or voice.

Definition

Biometric Categorisationan AI system that assigns people to categories on the basis of their biometric data — for example inferring characteristics or group membership from a face or voice.

The EU AI Act prohibits biometric categorisation that infers sensitive attributes such as race, political opinions, trade-union membership, religious beliefs, sex life, or sexual orientation. Other forms are permitted but carry transparency obligations, so people know when such a system is categorising them.
