What Is Emotion Recognition?

Emotion Recognition is an AI system that infers the emotions or intentions of a person on the basis of their biometric data, such as facial expressions, voice, or physiological signals.

Definition

Emotion Recognitionan AI system that infers the emotions or intentions of a person on the basis of their biometric data, such as facial expressions, voice, or physiological signals.

The EU AI Act prohibits emotion-recognition systems in the workplace and in education (except for medical or safety reasons) because of concerns about reliability, intrusiveness, and power imbalance. Outside those settings it is generally treated as high-risk and subject to transparency duties. The scientific validity of inferring emotion from appearance is widely contested.
