Office of the Australian Information Commissioner
Australia's national privacy and freedom-of-information regulator, responsible for administering the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles.
Its role in AI governance
The OAIC is the lead regulator for the privacy dimensions of AI in Australia. Because most AI systems process personal information, the Australian Privacy Principles govern how that data may be collected, used, and disclosed — and the OAIC has issued guidance on the privacy obligations that apply when organisations develop or deploy AI. Privacy Act reforms are progressively strengthening transparency requirements for automated decision-making.
